One of the most common New Year’s resolutions people make over and over is to lose weight. Some even buy ethically made activewear to encourage themselves to work out in the gym. Sticking to your weight-loss goals can be easier said than done but possible nonetheless.
Expect high customer traffic in gyms in January after the holiday binge and during the late spring season. The next thing you know, your clothes don’t fit. Of course, it can be a frustrating moment, and you might even feel like a failure for not being in control of your weight.
And so you made your resolve to lose that excess weight and work hard in the gym. But just as how you work hard to achieve your target weight, you also have to work hard in keeping your gym clothes smelling clean after washing them. Just when you think your workout clothes are already clean after some proper washing, let them dry and wear them afterward.
Still smelly? You could be washing your workout clothes all wrong. They can look clean on the outside until you get a whiff of your supposedly newly washed gym clothes. It can be a tedious business to wash your sweaty gym clothes, but there are ways to make them clean for your eyes and nose.
Cleaning your sweaty clothes
Your sweat does not really smell; it’s the bacteria breaking down that causes the stinky smell on your gym clothes. Here are tips on properly cleaning your activewear and making them smell better.
1. Don’t be overzealous with that laundry detergent.
If you want to make your clothes smell good, one common mistake is using too much detergent. However, the soap might not seep through spandex clothing and make the latter smell worse over time. Instead, you can use half the recommended amount of detergent or use a detergent specially made for activewear.
2. Don’t let your sweaty clothes sit for a long time.
The more you let your clothes hang out in the laundry basket, the more the smell will be harder to remove later on. Experts suggest letting your wet clothes dry first before tossing them in the washing machine. Better yet, wash your sweaty clothes after your gym session.
3. Consider using baking soda or white vinegar.
Aside from the usual detergent, you can find natural cleaning materials in your kitchen cupboard. Try soaking your clothes in cold water with a cup of white vinegar, let them sit for about 15 minutes, and then rinse them. Or you can add a cup of baking soda while washing your clothes.
